New on the rum scene is Shellback Rum from the folks in Modesto, Grande Antilles Cane Spirits (Gallo). No, it is not produced in Modesto, the rum is made at the famed West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados.
A mid-range offering, Shellback comes in both Silver and Spiced versions. Shellback Spiced is made in a combo of pot and column stills and then aged 12 months in former Bourbon barrels.
Appearance: Clear, medium amber with viscus legs
Nose: Clean with developing notes of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, ginger, dried figs, raisin, orange peel, stewed peach, and rum cake.
Palate: Dry, alcohol is smooth and integrated. Medium intensity of the same notes as the nose with a finish of vanilla and nutmeg.
Rating: Very Good.
Although no sugar is added, the aging and mix of 12 spiced make it a very smooth drinking rum.
ABV: 40% / 80 Proof
