We went to a very berry event last night hosted by Driscoll Berries. It was an interesting evening of cooking lessons and food photography all centered around blackberries. During the course of the evening, I sat next to one of the folks from Driscoll and learned a ton about berries. I had never really thought of it before but berries, like grapes, are “terroir” based and reflect the impact of their surroundings. It totally makes sense and helps explain why sometimes I like blackberries and sometimes I don’t.

It was a great evening and we learned a bunch. One of the highlights of the evening though was the cocktail that shaken up and served to us. The cocktail was a Berry Cobbler and was a nice mix of lemon and berries.

Ingredients:
5 ripe blackberries plus extra for garnish
10 ripe blueberries
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 oz. simple syrup
1 1/2 oz. Bulldog Gin
1/2 oz. Creme de Cassis
Champagne

Directions:
In a mixing glass, muddle 5 of the blackberries with the blueberries, lemon juice and simple syrup. Add the Bulldog Gin and Creme de Cassis. Top with ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a tall glass and top with Champagne. Stir from the bottom up. Garnish with the remaining blackberries.
